Space Technologies Insights Paper – Emerging Disruptive Technology Assessment

Noetic presents the Space Technologies Insights Paper, in partnership with the Defence Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Defence agency responsible for leading the development of Defence technological capabilities.

This Insights Paper explores key themes relating to recent and projected developments in both space technologies and the space environment. It provides a historical grounding of the current key technological drivers for space as well as identifying and discussing trends in space technology for the next five to ten years.

Defence Science and Technology (DST) is seeking to better understand the opportunities, threats and challenges space technology presents for Defence.

With an investment of $730 million over the decade to 2026, the Next Generation Technology Fund is a forward-looking program focused on research in emerging and future technologies for the ‘future Defence Force after next’. Innovative technologies and concepts researched under the Next Generation Technology Fund could be further developed and realised into capability through the Defence Innovation Fund.

In partnership with Noetic Group, DST held an Emerging Disruptive Technology Assessment Symposium (EDTAS) with a consortium of WA universities (TeamWA), to explore potential space advances in the 20+ year’s timeframe. To achieve this aim, the Space Technologies Insights Paper provides a historical grounding of the current key technological drivers for space as well as identifying and discussing trends in space technology for the next five to ten years.

The EDTAS considered space in two symposia; one at the unclassified level for a broad audience of academia, government, Defence and industry; and a second classified event for a predominantly Defence audience.

Each symposium featured a diverse range of expert presentations and facilitated immersive workshops to draw key insights into the subject areas. DST captured the output from these collective engagements in a big picture analysis report that will help identify key research themes for future study.
